Prior to the unit study

Participants read about a third grade unit on Boats, which was developed in New York City in the 1920’s. Lawrence Cremin’s book provides the historical context and Nell Curtis’s describes the unit itself.

Part 1. The unit: Adventures with boats, II

In part 1, we discuss the unit and then participate in an example lesson/activity on buoyancy. The activity is chosen because it can be done within a classroom in a modest amount of time.

Part 2. The unit study

In part 2, we critique what we’ve just experienced and then reimagine the unit for present circumstances.
