Teaching thinking skills, 1980-84

Research on the training of higher cognitive learning and thinking skills. The project, led by Ray Nickerson, sought to

  • determine what is known about the teaching of cognitive skills, drawing information both from the research literature and from the results of efforts to develop cognitive enhancement programs
  • organize this information in a form useful to researchers, and to educators who may wish to implement a cognitive enhancement program,
  • identify questions relating to the teaching of cognitive skills that require research,
  • initiate research on those questions.

As part of the project, Ed Smith and I developed a taxonomy for thinking skills and explored its implications for teaching and research.
