- During Black History Month, when Stephen was eight years old, members of his third grade class wrote to local African-American notables about their history in the community. Stephen wrote to Pete Bridgewater, a jazz great, who was from an illustrious family of Illinois jazz/blues musicians. Pete shared his thoughts about Black History and life in general in the form of an oral letter on a tape cassette. / Stephen’s grandparents, Rhoda and Bernie, shared that tape with their good friends Tim and Ann. As a complete stranger, but fellow teacher, Tim wrote a letter to Pete to commend him for his wonderful message to a boy he didn’t even know (Feb, 1995)
